Nutrition

A balanced diet is essential for normal growth and development

Nutrition plays a very important part in keeping your pet fit and healthy. Many conditions and ailments, such as skin complaints, stomach disorders, dental disease and weight problems can be traced back to poor diet.

A diet that contains the right balance of nutrients to meet your dog’s needs, depending on his age, physical condition and lifestyle can help keep your dog in the best possible health. Diet can also play an important role in slowing the progression of certain conditions.

It is important not to have too much or too little of the essential nutrients. It is best to feed your dog according to its age and health status. A puppy has different nutritional needs to an adult or senior dog. Different breeds also have special requirements, for example a large breed puppy (one whose adult weight will exceed 25kg) has different needs to a small breed puppy. Hills Vet Essentials Range and Purina Proplan diets cater for all different ages and sizes. These diets are highly digestible with high quality proteins, which mean fewer tummy upsets and smaller firmer stools. Generally we recommend dry food, as it is better for the teeth, cleaner and more economical.

Obesity

Obesity is very common in dogs. It can be the result of overeating, a lack of exercise or possibly a medical condition. Whatever the cause, an overweight dog is at an increased risk from a whole range of medical problems, including diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and skin problems. Our nurses and vets may recommend a Pet Slimming Program for overweight animals. An additional therapy which can be used to help weight loss is Hydrotherapy.
